Termination of Employment

When an active Member terminates employment with the County of San Diego or a participating employer, they become a deferred Member. Deferred Members have two options concerning SDCERA contributions:

      •  Leave their contributions on deposit with SDCERA, or
      •  Request a refund of their contributions.

A vested deferred Member is eligible to receive a lifetime retirement benefit. To be vested, a Member must have five or more years of service credit. However, this benefit will be forfeited if a vested Member takes a refund of their contributions.

To make an informed decision, a Member should consult their tax and financial advisors.
